Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the possible Baltic or Slavic origin of Est varn ’peg, hook or a piece of furniture equipped with hooks for hanging clothes etc, which is attached to the wall, wall peg’, Vot varna ’wooden nail (in the wall); long stick, vertical support (at both sides of the load); (protruding) end of the shaft connecting the wheel pairs of a wagon, peg’, Fin vaarna ’wooden peg; tenon joining the vertical boards of a wooden vessel etc.’, Ing vārnikke ’embroidered cloth attached to the window-frame and hung in front of the icon, curtain’, Kar voarna etc ’(clothes-)peg, tenon’, Lude vuarnu etc ’hanging nail or ~ hook’, Veps varn ’wall peg’ on the background of such dubious cases of borrowing as Est pard, Fin parta etc ’beard’ and Est varblane, Fin varpunen etc ’sparrow’. The assumed Baltic source is *varnā (cf. Lat vārna ’grooved block of wood for rope plaiting; beekeeper’s three-pronged hollow block of birch’). The possible Slavic source word is Proto-Slav *vorna (cf. e.g. Rus dial. воронá ’opening under the steering boot’, ворóнка ’funnel, hopper’, воронéц ’timber beam, joist, massive mid-wall shelf beginning from the stove and the pantry behind it’.
