Summary/Abstract: An important an interesting problem that has not been studied till now in Romanian historiography is that of the electoral symbols used by the political parties in local and parliamentary elections in Romanian’s parliamentary democracy 1919-1937. Therefore, this study is the first one published on this topic and the author used many undiscovered documentary sources from the funds of the Central Electoral Commission in writing this article. The first part of this study analyses the stipulations of the electoral legislation concerning the choice and the use of the electoral symbols. Then, the author deals with the symbols every new political group or party had chosen the time between 1919-1937. Also, a great part of the study is about the conclusion of the ways different analysts of inter-war political life interpreted the existence of the electoral symbols and the impact they had against the electorate. Another important problem this study speaks about is that of the importance that the political parties gave to their own electoral symbols. The conclusion is that, using the electoral symbols by the political parties between 1919 and 1937 was determined primarily by the lack of education of the electors, by their illiteracy. Not knowing how to read, the elector put the stamp on the electoral list that had on its top the electoral symbol he knew or wanted.
