Summary/Abstract: Applying the perspective of the theory of social formations, the author of this paper traces back the diffusion of popular simplistic notions (e.g., „knowlegde society”) and the superficial usage of related terms without a scientifically sound background, to the vagueness of the term „information society”. In his analysis, he questions the collatibility of post-modern and marxist theories of societal formations and conceptual systems, and challenges the validity of the intermediary „post-marxist” views.
