Summary/Abstract: The author introduces his paper by citing a colleague-teacher of his, who, replying to the question what he thinks the information society is, said: „It means that people have Internet access at home… and things like this”. To give a more accurate definition of the term, the author outlines several perspectives in his paper, analysing five decisive aspects of the information society. Commenting on the aspects of technology, scientific thinking, resources, economic models and knowledge, he argues that the concept of an information society is by all means much richer than those of information technology or the digital infrastructure.
