Summary/Abstract: Italy had captivated the French elites in the Renaissance and also the case in the Eighteenth century. The phenomenon coincided with the English style back in France the "grand tour" . We can try to consolidate the wide variety of trips into several catagories: the tourist trip to Rome, Naples or Venice, the cultural journey that gave birth to the neo-classical movement, business travel, travel for a religious pilgrimage, and finally moving political or diplomatic. Bordeaux is often presented as the port city tour to the West Indies; but people in Bordeaux often went to Italy: the judiciary as Montesquieu or du Paty, local artists such as Lacour. The case of Francois Latapie is definitely interesting because it shows how in fact the son of the great philosopher, Jean - Baptiste de Secondat Montesquie, tried to discover Europe through his secretary.
