Summary/Abstract: Th e paper presents the history and symbolism of the biblical festival of shelters. The fi rst part concerns to the origin of this feast, which had four stages described in the Bible. It had the agricultural character in the beginning – the time of this feast was the autumn and the place of celebration was the vineyard. Later the people visited the shrine to stand in the presence of God and to celebrate in the community of the nation. Th e permanent elements of the festival were: holidays, pilgrimages, reading of the Law of the Lord, setting up of the tents and off erings. The second part of the paper presents the symbolism of the festival (the journey through the desert and revelation of Law), the interpretation of the light, water and herbs used during the celebration. At the end it presents the hypothesis of the feast of the enthronement of Jahweh, which was celebrated probably in the same time.
