Summary/Abstract: Church introduces people on the way of penance and full reconciliation. It calls sinners to convert and liven the rituals of penance with music in order to protect believers from formalism and routine Th e following things are necessary in penitential community celebrations: appropriate music and singing. Diff erent penitential songs which referred to the tradition of penitential David’s psalms have always been known in Church life and liturgy. In penitential services the songs are sung at the beginning of a celebration. The next group of musical pieces comprises chants of word liturgy. Appropriately chosen penitential act can also be sung. It is advised to express God gratitude with joyful singing at the end of a penitential service. The subject of penitential singing refers to sin and reformation. The lyrics of the songs should enable to examine conscience and refer to the gospel including the parable about God’s mercy and evangelical blessing. It should tend to break with sin and imitate Jesus Christ. According to Priesthood postulates singing in penitential services should take into consideration age groups or different states gathered in church, for example, adults, youth, children, the sick and the consecrated.
