Summary/Abstract: The Varsovian weekly “Stolica” from 1956 is an interesting chronicle of changes in perception and presentation of the city. The magazine abandoned the pathos of city restoration as well as the remainders of enthusiasm for socialist realism and adopted a critical tone towards the current architecture. The thaw was a time of a lively discussion about Warsaw “mistakes and distortions”, for example, abortive urban guidelines, monumentalism or neglected areas, but it was also the dawn of the opening to the West. The readers were allowed to express their views on the shape of post-war Warsaw. The 1956 issues of the weekly reveal fascination with modernity, even a dream of a new – this time modernist – utopia.
