Summary/Abstract: Philosophy of science, up to now mainly focused on physics and biology, is shown to have important tasks with respect to chemistry, both seen from the perspective of chemists and of philosophers. Concept and theory formation in chemistry differs basically from those in other natural sciences. The contribution of chemistry to modern understanding of the world and of the human being is important. A constructive approach to regard chemistry as results of human acting toward ends opens also the discussion of technology assessment and of ethical questions concerning chemical research.
