Summary/Abstract: The article examines the dynamics in the display and perception of the meaning of body modification. The shift from personal specificity and de- sires to popularization and commercialization of intentional changes in the structure and appearance of the human body is in particular focus. The article questions the changing meaning of the modification as a way of self-expression, and raises ethical issues related to the way of thinking about the body value. The article focuses on the influence of the aesthetic industry in modelling the public attitude towards the human body, tolerating or eliminating its appearance, as well as the ability of this industry to influence the understanding of values such as „health“, and to create sustainable association with categories such as „beauty“ and „success“.
