Summary/Abstract: The article contextualizes the contemporary ideas about ‘fear’ within a psychological and philosophical framework where theories of Martin Heidegger, Jean Paul Sartre and others are discussed. A typology of fear is offered where the possible social functions of this emotion are discussed besides the main types of its ‘origin’. The term ‘culture of fear’ is proposed to describe the recent situation of mankind in the globalised context.
