Turkey's Foreign Policy Objectives

Summary/Abstract: Targets for the foreign policy to be adopted in the following regions are analysed: Europe, Middle East, Central Asia ,Caucasus, USA. The rapidly changing international scene has led Turkey to review the validity and advisability of some of Turkey's current foreign policy objectives, policies and strategies. Conscious of this need the Foreign Policy Institute has set up several working groups composed of academics and other specialists to review the international conditions and put forward a number of suggestions regarding the objectives towards which the Turkish foreign policy should direct itself. Naturally, it is up to the politicians to determine the actual policies, and the Foreign Policy Institute has thought that their task will be easier if a public debate can take place on the objectives of the Turkish foreign policy towards different parts of the world that are of interest to Turkey. The areas covered are generally Europe, Middle East, Central Asia (including the Caucasus region) and the United States. Obviously, we need to expand our coverage while we must also limit our focus to geographically more limited areas, if we are to come out with practical foreign policy suggestions. Since different areas were taken up by separate working groups each area has been treated in a different manner and style. We will publish some of the reactions to our proposals as well as me continuation of the study in our future issues. Ed.)
