Summary/Abstract: British intellectuals of the 19th and 20th centuries evaluated their society from the point of view of intellectual elite integrated with privileged social groups. This factor formed their judgment. Nevertheless, ideas and values of the British intellectual elite are in opposition to those believed in by ‘practical people’. The way the intellectuals evaluate British society indicates their involvement in social issues (particularly from the end of the 19th century) on the one hand, and their pursuit of isolation. Social reality in their views is the world dominated by hierarchy and pragmatism, critical judgments are softened by recognition of its positive aspects, though.
