Summary/Abstract: During the last twenty years the population size of Pécs decreased significantly with thirteen thousands. The downward trend can be traced back mainly to migration loss (nine thousands). The magnitude of gross migration was strikingly stable over years while net migration was less equal. The article examined solely the internal migration processes of Pecs during the last two decades using register type data which focuses on migration events. The investigation’s strengths is the fact that the bulk of migration events occured at short distance. Most of such flows can be addressed to suburbanization and within county migration. Relating to the longer distance migration it stresses the growing importance of Budapest and some larger cities. The pulling effect of Hungarian Capital has increased for the last years. Comparing the migration characteristics of Pécs to other cities nearly similar processes were found regarding the relative size of population lost and the age structures of in- and outmovers.
