Some formal and formative aspects of the short story

Summary/Abstract: The definition of the short story has, so far, been mainly quantitative, deriving from comparison with the novel. The author points out some basic differences in growth and structure of the two forms of narrative prose. The short story - in continuity with the preceding novella - reveals in its growth the formative function of oral narration and therefore an accountable shortness in structure. The novel - as mode1ed on written forms - requires a corresponding length of composition. In a further comparison of the short story with its longer and shorter varieties of form (with two distinctive terms in Croatian) tbe autor discusses some divergences both in structure and, partly, in quality as well.
