Summary/Abstract: 2004 marked a phase of intense UN debate on global security and development: the international community took up new challenges and threats and outlined prospects for far-reaching changes in the field of economic and social co-operation. The activities of the UN were subjected to a critical examination. Its focus was on the Organisation’s reform and renewal, with a view to reducing international tensions and overcoming major barriers to growth.
