Summary/Abstract: The analysis of contemporary literatures in European minority languages is no doubt one of the most embarrassing issues for current scholars. Whether we are writing a cursory survey of recently published books, or an in-depth study of the matter, one question arises: When does a literature exist? Or in a more particular context: Why can we affirm that Aragonese (or Catalan, Occitanian, Welsh…) literature exists today? Obviously, it is not my purpose to outline a division of literature written in some minority language into historical periods (cf. Laínez 1999), nor to draw conclusions regarding the long centuries of creative emptiness, but to reflect on what happens when the structures that normally support a literature fall apart.[...]
