Fifty years of the Defi ning Dictionary of Standard Estonian

Summary/Abstract: First, the essence of a monolingual defi ning dictionary is considered, analysing its different aspects rising to the fore in different languages at different times. The fi rst monolingual defi ning dictionary of a language is related to the social status of the language, to language planning and to language policy. Against the background of the history of the Defi ning Dictionary of Standard Estonian some general issues of dictionary compilation are discussed, such as corpus size and certain principles of meaning defi nition. On the example of Estonian lexicography, two main types of monolingual dictionaries are compared.
