Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the notion of the barbarian in its connection with the meanings of the stranger, the foreigner, and the Other. The analysis is based on two poems of Tomas Venclova “Between Landwehrkanal and Spree“ and “By the Lakes“. The paper inquires the problem of the role played by the aesthetic, ethic and ideological connotations in creating and dispersion of images of the Other and the foreign culture. It is argued that Venclova bounds these connotations with such categories of value as identity, memory and responsibility. The latter categories on their turn complicate the dialogic relation with the Other.
