Summary/Abstract: After the fall of the communist regime in 1991, Albania was shocked by deep conflicts, socio-economic crises and public order disturbances. These circumstances generated mass emigration, both legal and illegal, to western European countries, mainly Greece and Italy, and, from there, to other European nations. This, in turn, led to the spreading of Albanian criminal tentacles. The use of brutal force, the perpetration of serious crimes, the bloody settles of scores with opponents and the ethnically exclusively group structure has facilitated the supremacy and rapid escalation of Albanian organised crime in EU countries. The trafficking of human beings, mainly for prostitution, and drugs trafficking has become the principal business of Albanian criminal groups. In order to understand how a small nation more or less the size of Maryland, basically isolated until 1991, has managed to generate such a brutal and determined criminality, we need to look back at the history of Albania. The past history of Albania shows that the common denominator in its different historical phases is that Albania has always been ruled with harshness and with no respect for human rights.
