Museumification of the Upper Paleolithic site of Yudinovo in the Bryansk region (to the conservation problem)

Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on preservation problems of the ‘Paleolit’ museum exposition created for the Upper Paleolithic site of Yudinovo. The museum is located in Yudinovo village, in Bryansk region, 450 km south-east of Moscow. The Yudinovo site is situated on the right bank of Sudost River, the tributary of Desna River. The site was discovered in 1934 and investigated since 1947. The first researcher K.M. Policarpovich reported a dwelling made from bones and soil by its Upper Paleolithic inhabitants. The finding was confirmed by other archeologists during the later excavations. To date, five mammoth bone-earth dwellings had been excavated at the site. In 1984, two of them were prepared for museumification. The author provides a detailed description of the main problems related to the Yudinovo museum, such as preservation and conservation of the exposed dwellings, and provides some suggestions on how to make the exhibition more attractive and interesting for visitors.
