Research on a multilayer Paleolithic site in the Shulgan-Tash (Kapova) cave

Summary/Abstract: In the article, materials of 2008–2011 research in a multilayer site located on a ledge (Balcony) of the Cascade gallery of Shul’gan-Tash (Kapova) Cave, in the Burzyansk area of Republic of Bashkortostan. The platform is located between the middle and the top floors of the cave, in the height of 12 m. Here, it has been revealed evidence of a multilayer Paleolithic occupation, the early Holocene (Mesolithic ?) layer, and deposits of ethnographic time. The analysis of the material has shown uniformity of the lithic industry and its affiliation to sites of the Ural Upper Paleolithic tradition. The set of implements specifies that limited economic activities and various rituals of obviously young men were carried out in this area.
