Summary/Abstract: One of the main aims of social politics is the decrease of the range of economic poverty, defined as the lack of financial resources necessary to satisfy the needs of the mem¬bers of a given household. This paper tries to indicate the factors which have a substantial influence on the diversity in the assessment of range and depth of economic poverty. These factors include, among others: lack of unified methodology of defining the poverty threshold, and different sources and varied character of statistical data related to poverty. The data de¬picting the differences in assessment of the spheres of economic poverty come from the Household Budget Surveys, the EU Statistics of Income and Living Conditions – SILC, and the panel research carried out in the framework of Diagnoza Społeczna (Social Diagnosis) initiative.
