Summary/Abstract: Up to recent only Late Acheulian industries were found in the Caucasus and its origins were considered to be in the Near East. New investigations in Armenia (South Caucasus) first yielded Middle and Early Acheulian materials permitting to revise this scenario. To judge by the U-Pb absolute dating and paleomagnetic data, the Acheulian makers appeared in the region by 1.8–1.9 Ma. The analyzed lithic industries show specific technological and morphological features that differ them from the Late Acheulean sites. There are, however, certain common features hinting to a probable intra-regional evolution of this Early Acheulean, thru a number of transformation provoked by internal factors (changing of raw material, activities, etc.) or/and by the arrival of new traditions.
