Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the findings of five sociolinguistic explorations of bilingualism with a specific focus on language maintenance and language shift. The studies cover a range of language contact situations and each focuses on a different language pair or pairs. Common to all five studies is the argument that the processes of language maintenance and shift need to be considered in relation to individuals' networks of relationships, the social mechanism by which language choice is negotiated and sustained.
