Volunteers versus non-volunteers: the role of motivational persistence

Summary/Abstract: The authors analysed the concept of „motivational persistence” (Constantin et al. 2007, 2008) in non-profit organizations, as a specific organizational context. The research was conducted on a sample of 141 subjects, including both volunteers (71 Ss), and nonvolunteers (70 Ss). The main hypothesis asserted that the volunteers would be more persistent motivationally than the non-volunteers. Additionally, the most important factors that predict motivational persistence were identified: the determinants of the perseverance, the uncertainty orientation, the success orientation and the motivational dominants. The collected data revealed the motivational persistence as a personality trait of the volunteers. A valid model meant to predict motivational persistence has been suggested, where overcoming obstacles, effort, and focus are significant factors. The success orientation and the uncertainty orientation seem to influence the motivational persistence, in spite of the fact that they are not predictors.
