Summary/Abstract: Neither the constitutional referendum of 5 September 2010 nor the parliamentary elections of 28 November 2010 put an end to the constitutional crisis and the period of political instability in Moldova. Indeed, political crisis is not a particularly new phenomenon in the country. Lucan A. Way therefore suggested perceiving Moldova not as an unconsolidated or emerging democracy, but rather as a failed authoritarian system. However, since the four-party-coalition “Alliance for European Integration” (AEI) took over government in September 2009 and was reaffirmed as a three-party-coalition in December 2010, Moldova has surprisingly made unprecedented progress both in speed and commitment towards European integration within just one and a half years. Therefore, the article aims to provide an answer to the question, whether the recent developments in the country constitute a significant step towards democratic consolidation or whether authoritarian structures still prevail.
