Summary/Abstract: The National State and the International System. The present paper constitutes an argument for the pre-eminence of the nation state on the world scene, and investigates the relation between the nation state and the international system. The paper presents the evolution of this relation from the times of the Westphalian Treaties ending the 30 Years War until our days; it analyzes the complex challenges the global system poses to the nation state of the present days; and it emphasizes, finally, the prominent role the nation state still plays on the scene of international politics.
