About Some Current Changes in the Lexicon of Mari Language

Summary/Abstract: The lexicon of the Meadow (Eastern) Mari literary language is currently going through a process of renewal. This process is determined by multifacete d changes in society, by achievements in technology and culture, and also by aspirations to retain specific features of the language and to use the language’s own resources. The vocabulary of the language is being broadened by borrowings, derivations with suffix, and by compounds. Mari abbreviations are emerging, neologisms and dialectal words are being used instead of Russian loan words.
