To be fat or slim? Between canon of beauty and cultural distance

Summary/Abstract: The article represents the discourse dedicated to body and its cultural signs. It poses the question concerning a connection between the created image of the female body, certain cultural norms, and social and economic conditions. The discourse concerns both synchronic and diachronic aspects (the author is interested in factors shaping the ideal of beauty in 18th century France). She also confronts the experiences of contemporary Western culture with African culture.
