Professor Lech Bednarski - a scientist, teacher and social activist

Summary/Abstract: Professor Bednarski is one of the few scientists who devoted their entire professional life to issues of accounting and Financial analysis. Excellent combining of scientific and educational skills with practical experience is the prominent feature of his work. Professor Bednarski's scientific and professional achievements amount to over 200 publications, including books, manuals and articles. Although his main field of interest is financial analysis, his works in accounting and auditing are also widely known. He has been active in international co-operation with leading professional bodies: the European Accounting Association, the American Accounting Association, the World Association for Case Method and Application, the International Association for Accounting Education and Research and the European Federation of Financial Analysis Societies. He has participated in numerous international congresses of professional accountancy and auditing bodies. During his 50-year career at the Gdansk University's Department of Business Administration (former Higher School of Economics in Sopot) he promoted 19 doctors and over 650 masters in accounting and finance. He has always been deeply involved in social and educational life of the Tri-city region. Between 1980-1990 he was deputy to the Gdansk District Councii. Over 38 years of his professional career he was the chairman of the Gdansk District Division of the Association of Accountants in Poland. He is the co-founder of the Higher School of Finance and Accounting in Sopot - the unique school that promotes old tradition of high-level education in economics and management in the Gdansk Region. Professor Bednarski is a highly respectable person who has uniquely combined rare teaching talents with remarkable capabilities of shaping students' characters in the spirit of truth and honesty. Due to both exceptional achievements and features of personality as well, he has gained outstanding regard and esteem of the fellow scientists, practitioners, professional accountants, students and all those who have been given the opportunity to meet him.
