Summary/Abstract: For about 20 years, the author of the article has cooperated with professor Anna Przecławska in the research of the young Polish generation. It focused mainly on conditions of social and cultural attitudes of the young. The long-term research project carried out in 1988, 1993 and 2003 on 18-30-year-olds resulted in wide empirical material allowing to find an answer to the question how expectations towards system and economic transformations in Poland have faced the reality within more than ten last years. The analysis of young people’s attitudes towards the transformations was based on their answers about the qualities of a good social system, in which they would like to function. The question was asked in 1988, 1993 and 2003. The comparison of the answers allows a reflection on relations between social and economic changes on the one hand and changes in social awareness of the young on the other hand. Two types of attitudes were discovered, as a result of the research: liberal and social one. Another question to be answered was how the attitudes are formed. Many factors were taken into consideration, like social roots of the respondents, their actual social position, their personality. The next question to consider was whether the attitudes can be foreseen, how and to what extend. As the analysis shows, social transformation triggers cultural changes and attitudes, which in turn encourage further modernization.
