Summary/Abstract: This study analyzes the ideological, institutional, and representational functions of the "Golden Rose" Film Festival (1956–1989) in socialist Bulgaria. Conceptualized as a state mechanism for control and legitimation, it enforced socialist realism and the BCP's ideological priorities. The research traces the evolution from rigid Stalinist control and self-censorship in the 1950s to refined cultural conformism, national mythology, and international outreach in the 1970s. By the 1980s, the festival became a site of crisis and tension, where critical cinema openly challenged the totalitarian regime.
