Summary/Abstract: This article examines ritual practices in the wedding ceremonies of a migrant social group of German-Turks, living in Berlin. The field research was conducted from March to October 2007. Rituals are conceived as an externalized and materialized form of cultural memory, which can be defined as a “created shared past” settling on territorial, linguistic, religious and socio-historical collectivities. However, this paper’s guiding concept is Assmann’s “communicative memory” rather than “cultural memory” with its dynamic and process-related content.
