Summary/Abstract: This article is devoted to the elements of newspeak in Vladimir Putin’s statements. The empirical material consists of the Russian President’s speeches dedicated to Ukraine’s conflict at the beginning of its two phases — the hybrid (2014) and the full-scale war (2022). The purpose of the study is to identify and describe the role of label words, which are one of the most important elements of the modern newspeak of the Russian authorities. The article characterizes the topoi that form the basis for the evaluative nominations of the enemy used by Putin, which fit into the opposition’s “friend–foe”. Labels in the texts were studied using content analysis and lexical-semantic analysis. The results of the study show that, in comparison with Putin’s speeches from the beginning of the conflict in Donbas (2014), in the statement from 2022 the enemy category has been expanded, covering in addition to the Ukrainian side, authorities of the US and Western Europe, as well as internal opponents.
