Summary/Abstract: The article examines the white cube of the modernist gallery and the black box of experimental theatre as historical regimes of viewing rather than neutral containers for art. It traces their distinct genealogies: museum reform, sparse hanging, and the institutionalisation of the white wall, on the one hand, and the dissolution of the stage-as-picture, avant-garde scenography, and flexible theatrical space, on the other. Their comparison reveals a shared modern logic: through spatial reduction, they produce either an autonomous artwork or a self-contained event while shaping the spectator’s body, attention, and perception. In dialogue with Claire Bishop, the “grey zone” is defined not as a third architectural type but as a conflictual convergence of exhibitionary and theatrical protocols. This convergence is driven chiefly by new institutional formats, transformed artistic spaces, and changing organisations of time and spectatorship, rather than by mobile digital culture alone.
