Summary/Abstract: Walter Benn Michaels’s article analyzes Derrida’s understanding of writing assimultaneously producing and abandoning marks. The author reconstructs the debateover intention, action, and meaning, drawing on Derrida, Searle, de Man, Davidson, and his own concept of intentionalism developed with Steven Knapp. Michaels arguesthat Derrida confuses failure to communicate with failure to mean, thus replacingunderstanding of the text with its effects. The article defends the thesis that the meaningof an utterance appears as inseparable from the author’s intentional action, and that thepossibility of misreading confirms, not weakens, the role of intention.
