Summary/Abstract: This article analyses motifs scattered throughout Magdalena Tulli’s sylleptic prose that converge with narratives about the autism spectrum, without determining whether they are linked more closely to the autobiographical or fictional pole of these works, and thus whether they constitute descriptions “from nature” or a form of intertextuality connected with the author’s background in psychology. These motifs are, however, reflected in the self-referential statements included in the volume of conversations with Justyna Dąbrowska. This thread intersects with the postmemory layer of Tulli’s prose, which, on the one hand, enables an examination of the relationship between two competing explanations for the sense of alienation experienced by the main characters and, on the other, invites reflection on how knowledge of the history of autism discourse – in the context of twentieth-century history, particularly through the examples of Hans Asperger and Bruno Bettelheim – is encoded within the deep structure of the works.
