Summary/Abstract: The French Republic remains an État-nation with an identity defined by the legacy of the French Revolution. France maintains a unique interpretation of national sovereignty, excluding the representation of minority communities. French laïcité has recently been strengthened as an effective instrument for curbing the expansion of radical Islam. French republicanism steadfastly upholds the principle of the indivisibility of the republic as the basis for the above-average role of the centralized state. In recent years, there has been a revitalization of state power and increased protection of sovereignty. In the name of the principle of the social character of the republic, France built an “overburdened” welfare state after World War II and is unable to cope with its reduction and modernization. Today, France’s global appeal stems not from its republican tradition, but from its cultural achievements and centuries-old historical heritage, which attract tourists from all over the world.
