Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes the functioning of Svalbard, a dependent territory with a unique status. It also presents the origins of the current relationship between Svalbard and Norway and the reasons for the involvement of modern states in activities in this territory. Furthermore, an attempt is made to examine the functioning of both local and central government in Svalbard, as well as Norwegian policy towards the archipelago. The analysis also covers contemporary challenges that are important for maintaining the current status of this dependent territory.
