Summary/Abstract: The article examines the relationships between the Anti-Federalist legacy and populism in the American political tradition. Key elements of Anti-Federalist thought, such as distrust of central authority, suspicion of elites, and the celebration of the “common man,” are reflected in the rhetoric and actions of populist movements. Deeply embedded in American political culture, Anti-Federalist sentiments contribute to the normalization of populism in the United States. For this reason, populism – despite its potential risks – often plays a corrective role while simultaneously contributing to the periodic reaffirmation of America’s political creed.
