The End of an Era? Liberal Democracy and the Self-Destruction Mechanism

Summary/Abstract: The article puts forward fundamental questions dealing with the root causes of the ongoing crisis of liberal democracy. The pivotal aspect of the study is reflected in the notion of nihilism, which points to the process of erosion undermining institutions and principles serving earlier as an unwavering foundation. Looking at this process the article includes into account the problem of “the will to illusion” and “the will to power”, with a special regard to the question of democratic caesarism. To this account is also added the problem of “emancipation hysteria”, highlighting the arena of social conflicts and disintegration.
