Summary/Abstract: The sevast existence at the time when some basic elements of Byzantine administration were accepted in Serbia also appeared probably in the late 13th century. They were undertaken directly, by observing the work of the Byzantine sevasts in Macedonia, who were mainly engaged on cadastral and financial lines, regardless of the possession of corresponding titles. In Byzantium, the sevastus was a title. In Serbia, this rank was transformed to a certain extent. Operating on the same field of administration, it has ever performed relatively definite functions. Although the issue of the existence of cadastre in Serbia remains open, the sevastos had a notable field of work, different from that of the kefalija's (administrative/judicial) or the prahtor's (tax collecting). The connection to the Byzantine practice is evident, but it is not completely copied.
