Summary/Abstract: The text begins with John Cinnamus' account on the campaign of the Byzantine emperor's commander and governor of Ioannes Doukas, during which he subdued the Dalmatian cities and took under his power the "people of the Kačić". The Kačić are singled out because of their political independence and the fact that they played a part in international relations, not because the author perceives the cultural or religious differences that might have set them apart from the surrounding world. In the sources from the second half of the 12th century, the Kačić, together form the people of Omis (the early rulers of the Narentines), are referred to as a factor upon which depended the safety of sailing the Adriatic. In the 13th century they may be accused of piracy. Towns concerning about the safety of trade frequently concluded treaties on several occasions with the Pope, Venice, the Hungarians and others, where mixing the people of Omiš and the Kačićs could be prevented from obstructing the shipping and attacking ships. The presence of Venice, which had become the master of Dubrovnik, and the consolidation of the power of Hungary and the Serbian state in the hinterland, limited the power and scope of the Kačić.
