Summary/Abstract: Any picture of the Serbian Nemanjić state would certainly be incomplete without an understanding of Byzantine sources, though one must always bear in mind the relative nature of their judgments on the matter. After all, Byzantine writers often viewed the neighboring Serbian state as a dangerous rival, whose southward expansion constantly threatened vital Roman (Byzantine) holdings on the Balkan Peninsula. This observation applies particularly to the reign of King and Emperor Stefan Dušan (1331–1355)—a period when the Nemanjić state reached the peak of its territorial extent and constitutional development—regarding which the most extensive information is found in the writings of John Kantakouzenos and Nikephoros Gregoras, two giants of Byzantine historiography in the first half of the 14th century.
