Summary/Abstract: Local cults—expressions of universal piety anchored to a specific place and its history— remain among the most enduring forms through which religion manifests in the contemporary world. Despite profound shifts in the sociocultural landscape of the postmodern era, these localized devotional complexes continue to shape believers’ lives, drawing pilgrims in search of an immediate encounter with the sacred and the promise of miracles. This study examines the veneration of the Virgin Mary Three-Handed in Bulgaria by focusing on the principal local cults centered at three monasteries from the Stara Planina region: those of Troyan, Arbanasi, and Sokolski— all dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos. From a diachronic perspective, I examine their origins as distinctive reproductions of a prestigious prototype, drawing on both historical evidence and local foundation legends. Focusing on the contemporary landscape, I utilize fieldwork conducted between 2019 and 2025 to explore the constitutive elements of each local cult: sacred images, sanctuaries, festive days, rituals and invented practices, consecrated items and relics, and miracle narratives. A comparative analysis of these three cases reveals both shared devotional patterns and site-specific expressions, offering fresh insights into the dynamics of local devotion in modern Orthodox Christianity. This study thus contributes to broader debates on lived religion by demonstrating that the global and the local are mutually constitutive: Orthodox tradition provides shared frameworks, while communities give them distinctive shape and sustained vitality. The universal tenets of Orthodoxy emerge not as monolithic dogma but as a living mosaic of local voices and practices.
