Summary/Abstract: When the northern part of Moldavia was annexed by the Habsburg Empire, the number of monasteries, which amounted to several dozen, was reduced to three: Putna, Sucevița and Dragomirna. Through the measures introduced by the authorities in Vienna, the situation of the monasteries worsened both spiritually and materially. Between 1835 and 1873, Bishop Evghenie Hacman, the Consistory of Chernivtsi and the abbots of the abovementioned monasteries sent countless requests and memos to the authorities in Lviv, Vienna and Chernivtsi, requesting in particular the increase in the number of monks and that of the allowances for food and clothing. Unfortunately, their grievances were only fulfilled to a small extent.
