Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the importance of context in the decision-making process regarding privacy on the Internet. Previous analyses have primarily been based on the concepts of the privacy paradox, privacy cynicism, and privacy self-management, which explain in different ways the tension between individuals declared attachment to privacy and their actual behaviour. The article presents the results of a study aimed at examining whether users behave paradoxically in relation to privacy protection. The study was based on a survey conducted among Polish adults who are regular Internet users. The data show that users act according to contextual integrity regarding their privacy protection. The issue of data sharing should be analysed within the context in which these decisions are made. The findings clearly indicate that users share different types of data differently, in different places (data controllers), and with different recipients. There are privacy protec¬tion techniques (including “Do Not Track” and VPNs) that cause data to no longer ade¬quately reflect reality. Introducing the concept of context into the analysis of users’ privacy protection does not eliminate power asymmetries. Users cannot fully understand the social situation if they do not know or understand the purposes for which their data are collected.
