Summary/Abstract: Despite certain shortcomings of the comparative method, it was used in this text for several reasons. The speeches whose parts are the subject of our analysis were delivered by Cicero several months apart, which means that with diachronic analysis we can examine whether and how much his procedure differs in dealing with the same topic. It would be interesting to go further in the diachronic study and investigate how he later declared himself about the consuls Gabinius and Piso. Cicero lashed out at Piso on several more occasions; we will mention only two such speeches: De provinciis consularibus (56 AD) and In Pisonem (54 AD). Conversely, in the same period he was forced (under pressure from Pompey) to defend Gabinius, accused of various offenses during the provincial administration. Also, we should synchronically compare what Cicero writes about the consuls in his correspondence. The first of these speeches - Post reditum in senate, which Cicero spoke before the senators on September 5, 57, immediately after his return from exile, belongs to the so-called ceremonial or laudatory oration. The second speech - Pro Sestio, which Cicero spoke before the judges in February 56. as the defender of Publius Sesti, belongs to the court oratory. We have set ourselves the task of determining whether and to what extent different circumstances, the intentions of the author himself and the audience caused variations in the treatment of the same topic - the trial of the consuls Gabini and Piso.
