Summary/Abstract: TikTok’s distinctive functional design and algorithmically personalized content create an environment for diverse patterns of user experience. The present study examines the associations between the Big Five personality traits, self-esteem, TikTok use, and motivation for participation on the platform. The sample consisted of 126 TikTok users aged 16 to 56 years. Measures included the 20-item Mini International Personality Item Pool (Mini-IPIP), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), a TikTok use scale, and an adapted social media motivation scale. The results indicate that extraversion is positively, whereas self-esteem is negatively associated with TikTok use, with both variables demonstrating a statistically significant independent predictive contribution. Regarding overall motivation to participate, self-esteem was the sole significant predictor, with lower self-esteem being linked to higher overall motivation. Furthermore, distinct associations emerged between neuroticism, conscientiousness, self-esteem, and specific motivational factors. These findings highlight that TikTok engagement extends beyond quantitative usage metrics and is also associated with users’ personality profiles and underlying motives.
